LatAm wrap: Telcel loses subscribers in Q3 2014

This week the Federal Telecommunications Institute released updated numbers for the Mexican telecom market during the third quarter of 2014.

The number of mobile line subscribers decreased a little from 103 million to 102.18 million, a penetration of 85.4 subscribers per 100 inhabitants.

Telcel, owned by America Movil, lost 1.3 million customers, reflecting in its market share that was at 69% by Q3 2014, while Telefónica gained 282,096 lines representing 20.8% of the total.

Unefón controls a 4.9% market share,while Iusacell tallies 3.6% and Nextel has 1.8%.

The vast majority of subscribers are prepaid, representing 85% of total mobiles lines. During Q3 last year, mobile broadband accesses reached to 41.2 million, an increase of 13.7% in a year-over-year comparison.

BRAZIL – Orange Business Services is considering a jump into mobile services in the country to only serve Orange customers who attend the Olympics Games next year in Rio de Janeiro. The French company is likely to get an MVNO license.

REGION – 4G Americas stated that LTE penetration is set to keep increasing across Latin America and the Caribbean. At total, the region had 16 million subscribers of the new technology last March, a number that should reach 196 million by 2019. Brazil, Colombia and Mexico push the growth of LTE lines.

COLOMBIA – David Luna was announced as the new head of the Information and Technology ministry. He takes over from Diego Molano who retired.
