Microsoft leaks Wi-Fi hot spot strategy

Microsoft Wi-Fi will include 10M hot spots in 130 countries

It looks like Microsoft may have accidentally leaked details of a planned worldwide Wi-Fi network reportedly comprised of some 10 million Wi-Fi hot spots in 130 countries.

Details of the plan were briefly available on June 2 at microsoftwifi.com, but the Web page content was quickly removed. However, the information was recorded by a number of media outlets prior to being taken down.

“Don’t waste time filling forms with personal information or managing different carriers to get connected,” the Web page stated. “Sign in once and you’re done.”

Microsoft already offers a service called Skype Wi-Fi that incorporates some 2 million hot spots around the world. Marketing materials promised “hassle free Internet access around the world” so people can stay “productive on the go.”

Microsoft representatives confirmed the service, but didn’t offer up any details.

A rep told VentureBeat: “We can confirm we are working on a new service, called MicroSoft Wi-Fi, that will bring hassle free Wi-Fi to millions. We look forward to sharing additional detail when available.”

Once it’s launched, the service is expected to be available to Skype Wi-Fi subscribers, employees or businesses with Microsoft Office 365 for Enterprise and customers offered the service as a promotion.
