NYC DAS, Wi-Fi, Fiber and Colocation – Inside Telecom Careers Episode 2

Exclusive interview with Hugh O’Kane Electric Company CEO, discussing NYC DAS, Wi-Fi, Fiber and Colocation

If you are interested in a telecom career installing and maintaining in-building DAS, Wi-Fi, fiber and colocation facilities in New York City, the CEO of Hugh O’Kane Electric Company, offered the following advice:

  • Contact local union 3 I.B.E.W and apply for apprenticeships.
  • If you are already a certified Local Union 3 journeyman, O’Kane recommends getting specialized certifications in optical fiber splicing and becoming certified to work in confined spaces.

The Local Union 3 I.B.E.W. 2015 apprentice interview process will be completed on Monday, June 29, 2015 – see website and pictures.  Apprentice interviews are open intermittently and based on industry demand. Apprentice candidates have to complete five-and-a-half years of training and then pass a test before being certified as a journeyman.  Career paths include specializing in areas like telecommunications or moving into foreman, general foreman or project manager roles.

With approximately 300 Local Union 3 I.B.E.W electricians, Hugh O’Kane Electric Company is one of New York City’s largest and oldest electrical contractors, specializing in telecommunications. Since the mid 1990s, O’Kane Electric, which was founded in 1946, has built fiber networks for almost every CLEC in the industry starting with TCG, which is now AT&T, as well as Metropolitan Fiber Networks (MFS) which is now part of Verizon.

After a general slowdown in NYC fiber deployments from 2003 – 2008, capital expenditures and operation expenditures have been steadily increasing due in large part to mobile operators and cable companies.   Several years ago, O’Kane was hired by NextG to build one of the nation’s largest outdoor DAS systems for MetroPCS, which comprised hundreds of miles of underground and aerial fiber as well as over 1,500 pole top antennas.

Today, O’Kane offers a turnkey suite of telecommunications services:

  • Building carrier hotels
  • Managing telecom riser closets
  • Building colocation centers
  • Managing the “last mile”
