Gemalto targets APAC telecom and banking

The Asia-Pacific region represented 22% of the firm’s overall revenues last year

SHANGHAI – Digital security provider Gemalto is seeing increasing opportunities in several verticals in the Asia-Pacific region including banking, telecommunications and government, the company’s marketing communications VP for Asia-Pacific Pierre Lelievre told RCR Wireless News.

The executive said that the Asia-Pacific region is key for Gemalto. Last year, the region represented 22% of Gemalto’s overall revenues.

“For 2015, we expect to continue expanding our operations in Asia-Pacific but we compete with other dynamic regions such as Latin America,” Lelievre said, without providing figures.

Lelievre said that China and Japan are among the largest markets for Gemalto in the Asia-Pacific region. The mobile payment industry in China is very developed. However, some developing markets such as Malaysia, Indonesia Philippines are experiencing a significant growth.

“We are also expecting to develop business opportunities in the Indian market, which is not yet a large market for us,” the executive added.

In government verticals, Gemalto sees opportunities in both e-passports and e-gates projects. “We are also providing monitoring tools for governments which enable them to know how security check points are working.”

In related news, Gemalto and China Telecom announced during the Mobile World Congress Shanghai event they are developing a proof-of-concept for connected cars using Gemalto’s LinqUs On-Demand Connectivity subscription management solution. The two companies presented a demo at the event to show how remote over-the-air provisioning can enable secure connectivity on mobile devices. Next, they plan to integrate the ODC solution on vehicles, paving the way for China Telecom’s automaker customers to offer instant connectivity on cars.

Gemalto currently employs 14,000 people in 99 offices, 34 personalization and data centers, and 24 research and software development centers located in 46 countries.
