Workforce news update:
- 29,000 AT&T Southeast District 3 union employees authorized a strike; however, continue working even though the existing contract expired on Aug. 8.
- Bloomberg reported that the 39,000-member CWA District 1 region is in the weakest negotiating position ever. VZ Communications’ CWA workers agreed to continue working even though the VZ contract expired on Aug. 1. Union workers are not laying down. They have launched radio ads blasting Verizon for not fulfilling its obligations to build fiber-to-home networks. Verizon has launched an app that its employees can use to record and document abusive behavior by the union.
- CenturyLink to cut over 1,000 workers. Louisiana’s largest publicly traded company has over 44,000 employees globally, and annual payroll in excess of $120 million. As you may recall, CenturyLink acquired Denver-based Qwest in 2011 for over $12 billion. CenturyLink does plan to hire an additional 800 people in Monroe, La., as part of an incentive program it received from local economic development authorities.  Earlier this year, CenturyLink completed a 300,000-square-foot innovation center in Monroe.
- Overall, it has been a tough month for the technology workforce. Last month, Microsoft announced a lay-off of 7,500 employees primarily related to the handset division they acquired from Nokia. Intel and Qualcomm also announced layoffs recently. The Wall Street Journal reported that Qualcomm, Nvidia, Broadcom and Corning are among the most exposed companies to recent China currency devaluations.
