Huawei’s SBC platform designed to support VoLTE, RCS, voice-over-broadband services
Spain’s Telefónica continues to push virtualization technology across its network, with the latest move coming in a deal with Huawei to provide the vendor’s session border control platform in support of advanced voice and communication services.
The two-year deal calls for Huawei to provide its SW2900 platform, designed to support voice-over-LTE, rich communication suite and voice-over-broadband services. Huawei said the “all-in-one” solution supports fiber-to-the home, RCS, VoLTE and network interworking access methods as well as the evolution to network functions virtualization and cloud migration.
Telefónica recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Alcatel-Lucent to test NFV technologies as part of the operator’s strategy to evolve its networking infrastructure. According to the companies, the work will focus on enhancing network performance and efficiencies to support the ever-growing demand for flexible connectivity.
The carrier earlier this year reported a partnership with Hewlett-Packard to act as the technology provider and systems integrator for Telefónica’s virtualization infrastructure, which is dubbed UNICA. That program will see the telecom operator tap NFV, SDN and cloud technology to overhaul current network operations.
Huawei also has been aggressively rolling out virtualization-focused solutions, including announcing earlier this month the recent completion of the first phase of an integration project with Red Hat that ties in multiple vendors’ mobile broadband architectures using NFV technology. The companies said the initial NFV “agile integration” work included LTE network tests in “heavy-traffic scenarios,” using the NFV/SDN Open Labs in Xi’an, China. The lab, which opened earlier this year, is one of nine certified by the Open Platform for NFV standards organization.
