Researchers report Wi-Fi hack, Ericsson to build LTE in Delhi for Bharti Airtel
5 things to know today in mobile and wireless
1. Researchers say a popular Wi-Fi router is vulnerable to hackers. Some models of Belkin’s N600 DB Wi-Fi routers can be taken over by hackers and made to contact malicious hosts, according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. The research says that the router does not set a password for the Web management interface by default, and that even if one is set, hackers can still get access if a user is logged in.
2. India’s largest telecom operator has tapped Ericsson to build an LTE network in Delhi, a city of almost 10 million residents. Bharti Airtel says Delhi is experiencing a surge in data use, and the carrier is responding with a network upgrade, which will include macro and small cell base stations, as well as Ericsson’s LTE radio access network software. Ericsson has already agreed to deploy LTE for Bharti Airtel in four other cities.
3. Huawei may have beat Apple to the punch by launching Force Touch technology in a high-end smartphone. The Chinese company says its new Mate S smartphone can distinguish between a tap and a deep press. The Mate S launched in Europe this week at a price point of roughly $730. Huawei is currently ranked as the world’s No. 3 smartphone maker with a 7.8% market share.
4. Consumers who don’t want to spring for a high-end smartphone may be interested in a new Android offering that keeps your apps in the cloud. Robin is a new smartphone launched by two former Google Android executives who’ve formed a startup called Nextbit. Robin uses software to learn your usage patterns, then takes the apps you don’t use very much and stores them in the cloud to free up space on your phone.
5. Smartphone battery life could get a boost from a new innovation out of Japan and Israel. TowerJazz Panasonic has new chip technology that it says cuts power loss in RF switches by up to 30%. TowerJazz is a publicly traded Israeli chipmaker.
