5G, iPhone 6S and superfast Wi-Fi … 5 things to know today

1. Today is Apple’s new product launch. The company has announced the iPhone 6S and a new stylus for the latest iPad. You can see the very latest here.

2. Verizon Wireless is set to begin field trials of 5G technology, which the carrier says will support 50 times the throughput of current LTE networks. The nation’s largest carrier expects some commercial deployment by 2017. Verizon Wireless is also launching a free mobile video service called Go90. The service will be available to subscribers of other wireless carriers (not just Verizon) and will be supported by ad revenue.

3. More mobile ads are coming to Instagram. The social media giant said it is leveraging the advertising infrastructure of Facebook, its parent company. Instagram will offer businesses a variety of video ad formats, and the ads can be as long as 30 seconds.

4. The Fire is out for Amazon. The company appears to have stopped selling its Amazon Fire phones, which were priced to compete with the iPhone but bundled with Amazon Prime Service. Amazon still sells the Fire TV stick and is expected to launch new tablets this fall.

5. High-speed Internet meets superfast Wi-Fi thanks to a new solution from Freescale. The Texas chipmaker has partnered with Quantenna Communications to launch 10 Gbps Internet plus 10 Gbps Wi-Fi in a home gateway solution. Freescale said the chipset will optimize video streaming, gaming and voice-over-Internet by categorizing and prioritizing wireless and Internet traffic.
