Dtac to launch LTE through 1,800 MHz spectrum

Thai operator aims to reach 5,000 4G LTE base stations by end of 2016

Thai mobile operator Dtac plans to launch 4G LTE through 10 MHz of spectrum in the 1,800 MHz band in October. The telco already offers 4G in Thailand using 5 MHz of spectrum in the 2.1 GHz band.

With the the new offering, Dtac expects to increase its 4G LTE customer base to 2.5 million by the end of 2015, up compared to current 1.6 million. The telco currently has 3,000 4G lTE base stations across the country, and aims to increase this number to 5,000 next year. In the 3G segment, the Thai operator has 24,000 base stations across the country. By the end of 2016, the telco aims to deploy 3,000 new 3G base stations.

Rival operator True Move is already offering commercial 4G lTE services through spectrum in the 2.1 GHz band.

Dtac has a total of 28.4 million subscribers. Of the total, 3.5 million are 2G users, 1.6 million are 4G lTE customers and the rest are 3G subscribers.

China Mobile adds over 20 million LTE subscribers in August

China’s largest mobile operator China Mobile ended August with a total of 229.2 million subscribers in the LTE segment, after a net addition of approximately 20.4 million 4G LTE subscribers during the month, according to information provided by the operators.

3G subscribers reached 202.6 million at the end of August, down from 209.9 million at the end of the previous month.

China Mobile’s overall mobile telephony base amounted to 820.1 million at the end of August, after adding 1.37 million during the month.

4G LTE technology accounted for 28% of the operator’s overall mobile subscriber base at the end of August. China Mobile has a market share of 63% in the Chinese mobile market.

The Chinese operator previously said it aims to reach 300 million mobile subscribers in the LTE segment by the end of this year.
