Former Sprint CTO Bye set to join C Spire

Bye set to assume C Spire CTO position Nov. 1

Former Sprint CTO Stephen Bye is set to turn up in the same position at regional telecom operator C Spire.

Bye, who left Sprint at the end of July as part of a major management shake up at the carrier, is set to join C Spire as CTO effective Nov. 1.

“I have known Stephen for many years and I can tell you that he makes our management team even stronger and he will be a great cultural fit at C Spire,” said C Spire CEO Hu Meena. “His technological expertise and leadership will be valuable additions to our company.

Bye joined Sprint in early 2011 as VP of technology development and strategy following a stint as VP of wireless at cable television provider Cox Communications, which had a mobile virtual network operator relationship with Sprint as part of its own mobile plans. Those plans were shuttered shortly after Bye’s departure.

Bye shortly added the CTO title at Sprint ahead of the carrier’s highly touted $5 billion Network Vision initiative that was to see the carrier work with its vendor partners in revamping its entire network architecture. However, that program was beset with challenges that saw the carrier’s network quality plummet and scare off customers.

Those issues eventually saw Bob Azzi, SVP of networks at Sprint, Steve Elfman, president of network operations, and Iyad Tarazi, VP of network technology development, all lose their jobs. Eventually Sprint CEO Dan Hesse also lost his position following Sprint’s acquisition by Japan’s Softbank.
