AT&T launches LTE across 6 Mexican markets

AT&T said it remains on track to launch LTE covering 40M pops in Mexico by year-end

AT&T moved on its plans to rollout LTE services across its new properties in Mexico, announcing the launch of service in six markets.

The initial markets tapping into the LTE service include Atlacomulco, Estado de México; Cuernavaca and Cuautla, Morelos; and Pachuca, Tepeji and Tulancingo, Hidalgo. AT&T said it remains on track to cover 40 million potential customers by the end of this year, 75 million pops by the end of 2016 and 100 million pops by the end of 2018.

Access to the LTE service will be included for no additional charge on current AT&T Unidos wireless plans available at Iusacell, Nextel Mexico and Unefon retail locations. The plans also include calling minutes, messaging bundles, unlimited social media access and access to Prip radio.

The network upgrades were made across the former Iusacell and Nextel Mexico operations, which AT&T acquired earlier this year for $4.4 billion. AT&T in late June announced plans to invest $3 billion to expand “high-speed, mobile Internet service.” Analysts note that the combined operations will control more than 70 megahertz of nationwide spectrum with 90 megahertz in some markets.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said the acquisition of Iusacell and Nextel Mexico will create what it called the first-ever North American mobile service area tapping into its own U.S.-based network and newly acquired assets. AT&T said the combined networks would cover more than 400 million potential customers.
