Affirmed Networks supplied virtual evolved packet core
In what the communications service provider billed as a strategic move, Saudi Telecom Co. deployed a virtual evolved packet core specific to machine-to-machine services.
The vEPC was provided by Affirmed Networks and enables Saudi Telecom to provide real-time service information and other features through network function virtualization.
In March, Affirmed Networks delivered a similar solution to South Korean telecom operator LG U+. LG U+, which competes against market heavyweight SK Telecom, said the move would allow it to deploy new networks and services across its wired and wireless operations, meet growing data demand tied to customers adopting services linked to the “Internet of Things” and help boost network operations as it moves toward so-called “5G” technologies.
Saudi Telecom, which is provides services in nine countries around the Middle East and North Africa, said NFV would help realize reduced costs and a better user experience.
