TIA expects to launch the first NFV-focused test lab in North America early next year
The Telecommunications Industry Association is throwing its might behind the growing network functions virtualization space, announcing plans to launch an NFV interoperability testing laboratory.
TIA said the lab is expected to launch early next year and is to be the first vendor-neutral testbed for NFV technology in North America. The site is set to leverage standards work being conducted by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute NFV Industry Specification Group, and benefit “original equipment manufacturers, solutions developers, integrators, researchers, customers and the end users who benefit from the deployment of these exciting new technologies.”
“The TIA NFV Lab will be the only lab of its kind to test true cross-platform, industrywide, ecosystem agnostic equipment, software and solutions,” touted TIA CTO Franklin Flint. “It will serve as a neutral venue for technology companies to prove the compatibility and scalability of NFV solutions.”
In a recent report, Technology Business Research predicts spending in the NFV and SDN market to hit $157 billion by 2020, driven by telecom operators based in the U.S. and Europe. TBR said three-fourths of that yearly spend will come from a handful of operators, including AT&T, Verizon Communications, CenturyLink, BT, DT, Orange and Telefónica. TBR did add that it expects Asia-Pacific operators to ramp up spending later in the forecast period.
A report earlier this year from HIS predicted the global market for NFV hardware, software and services is set to surge from $2.3 billion this year to $11.6 billion in 2019. Revenue from outsourced services geared toward NFV projects is expected to post a 71% compound annual growth rate from 2014 to 2019, with revenue from software-only video content delivery network functions for managing and distributing data forecast to grow 30-fold between 2015 and 2019.
