With some markets still to report, Verizon heads RootMetrics 2H 2015 metro rankings
Verizon Wireless again looks to be the darling of network performance tests conducted by RootMetrics, with the carrier scoring a top ranking in nearly twice the number of larger markets compared with its closest rival AT&T Mobility.
According to RootMetrics’ latest testing for the second half of 2015, Verizon Wireless had either the top score or was tied for the top score in 96 “metro” markets across the country. The carrier topped RootMetrics’ first half of 2015 rankings as well, with a top or tied for top score in 110 metro markets.
AT&T Mobility scored a top ranking or a tie for the No. 1 spot in 49 metro markets, compared with 68 markets for the first half of 2015. T-Mobile US scored a tie for the top spot in 16 metro markets, compared with 27 markets for the first half of 2015, while Sprint managed a share of the top spot in five markets in the latest round of testing.
Management at T-Mobile US and Sprint earlier this year took to Twitter to hash out the performance rankings. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure touted his company’s improved performance, while T-Mobile US CEO John Legere downplayed the RootMetrics results as being antiquated. Legere instead touted results from its own network performance testing partner Ookla, which T-Mobile US claims provides a more up-to-date measurement of consumer experiences.
RootMetrics conducts network performance testing using off-the-shelf smartphones against six criteria: network reliability, network speed, data performance, call performance, text messaging performance and overall performance. The company has not yet released results for all markets, and is expected to release its overall second half of 2015 results and findings in early 2016.
