SK Telecom demos interworking between two IoT standards

SK Telecom used its ThingPlug IoT platform for CES demo

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom, together with Samsung Electronics, Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Atmel and Axstone, said it successfully demonstrated interworking between heterogeneous “Internet of Things” standards OneM2M and Open Interconnect Consortium. The demo was displayed at this week’s CES 2016 event.

For the demonstration, the involved parties used SK Telecom’s IoT plaform ThingPlug based on the OneM2M standard, Samsung Electronics’ OIC devices, Atmel’s sensor and lighting development kit, and a gateway applied with “OneM2M-OIC Interworking Solution” developed by KETI and Axstone. The demo showed the successful control of the OIC devices via a smartphone by connecting the two different IoT platforms.

SK Telecom said the OneM2M standard has strength in supporting mobile communication between remotely located devices, while the OIC standard support seamless communication between devices located in close proximity to each other.

The OneM2M standard was established in July 2012 by a consortium of ICT standards development bodies to provide a common machine-to-machine service layer designed to be embedded within various hardware, software and connect devices. OneM2M currently claims 216 participating partners and members including Alcatel-Lucent, Adobe, AT&T, BT, Cisco, Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom, IBM, Intel, Samsung, Sierra Wireless and Telefonica.

Meanwhile, the OIC standard was created in July 2014 by technology companies to establish common ground on interoperability of IoT devices. Currently, the standard claims around 100 members including Cisco Systems, General Electric, Intel, MediaTek and Samsung.

“SK Telecom will continue to share its cutting-edge ICT with developers of both home and abroad to lead the creation of an enriched IoT ecosystem and bring innovative changes to customers’ lifestyles,” said SK Telecom’s CTO Alex Jinsung Choi.
