ADVA claims the deal will bolster NFV and cloud plans
ADVA Optical Networking is set to boost its cloud and network functions virtualization efforts following its announced acquisition of Overture Networks. Financial terms of the deal were not released.
According to ADVA, the deal combines two of the market’s largest carrier Ethernet access equipment makers, with Overture’s assets bolstering ADVA’s FSP 150 product line with an Ethernet-over-copper solution, a programmable white-box network interface device, a virtualized NID and an end-to-end orchestration solution.
“Our acquisition of Overture is a defining moment in the cloud access market,” explained ADVA CEO Brian Protica. “Firstly, we’re creating a No. 1 player in Ethernet access devices. There’s a full account and product synergy between our companies, ensuring a complete solution set for business Ethernet, mobile backhaul and carrier wholesale applications that can be sold into each other’s customer base. Secondly, we have a shared vision for the future of the cloud services market and the virtualized network. Adding Overture’s NFV-pure-play and orchestration solutions to our hybrid NFV solutions, operators can select what best fits their plans. And last but not least, we’re creating an incredible team. Overture has great people with a wealth of knowledge. With one united company, we’re going to help [communication service providers] take a huge leap forward.”
Overture last year released the results of a collaborative effort showing robust performance of NFV service chaining. The testing, which was done in partnership with Brocade, Intel and Spirent, showed “zero packet loss throughput” for a pair of gigabit ports carrying “line-rate IMIX traffic through multiple [virtual network functions] in a pure-play NFV environment.” Overture noted that “pure-play NFV” is considered the running of software VNFs on standards servers with no specialized networking hardware.
In addition, Overture started its Harmony Partner Ecosystem program, which attracted more than 20 partners in a move designed to ensure compatibility between NFV solutions being provided by different companies.
