Swedish firms plan to deploy 5G in Stockholm and Tallinn in 2018
Swedish companies TeliaSonera and Ericsson signed a strategic partnership through which mobile subscribers in Sweden and Estonia will be able to experience “5G” services in 2018.
The two companies plan to develop use cases and service scenarios, including both communication and “Internet of Things” services with the purpose to address new business opportunities. The partnership aims to commercialize the next-generation services to customers in Stockholm and Tallinn in 2018 by combining the TeliaSonera network with Ericsson technology.
“Stockholm and Tallinn are two of the most connected cities in the world and now we will take them to the next level. 5G will create completely new innovations, ecosystems and great services to our customers. I can’t wait to see how Stockholm and Tallinn will embrace 5G,” said TeliaSoneral President and CEO Johan Dennelind.
According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, there will be 150 million 5G subscriptions by the end of 2021.
In Sweden, TeliaSonera ended the third quarter of 2015 with 6.13 million mobile subscribers, down 1.5% compared to the year-ago quarter. The operator had initially launched commercial LTE services in the country in 2009 through spectrum in the 800 MHz band.
In Estonia, the telco currently serves 851,000 subscribers in the mobile telephony segment. In Estonia, TeliaSonera is the majority shareholder in the mobile operator EMT.
