Kagan: Apple update kicked me to the Internet slow lane

My Apple MacBook got another OS update yesterday. Now suddenly I am in the s-l-o-w l-a-n-e on the Internet. You want to talk about frustration? Updates are appreciated, however, when something goes wrong, users should be given the ability to go back to where they were before the update so everything works the way it should. Now I am stuck in the Internet slow lane until Apple figures out the problem and updates the update.

Does Apple even know the problems they are creating? I have been a Microsoft Windows user for decades. I’ve always had some issues with them as well, however, when push came to shove I could always re-install everything, start again and that usually worked. However, because a recent Windows meltdown caused me to update software anyway, I figured I had a choice. So I decided to go all-Apple.

This was not easy. It took me quite a while to figure out the differences between Apple and Microsoft Windows. In fact it has been several months and while I am much better, there is still plenty I don’t yet understand about Apple yet.

Microsoft Windows to Apple

Switching from one world to another is a big deal. However, I was not a total loon. I do use an iPhone and I do use an iPad so I am pretty familiar with Apple. That’s the good part. The bad part was that is simply not enough to solve these problems.

And this problem, caused by the Apple MacBook update, is creating some sizable issues that I simply don’t know how to fix. After all, like Dr. McCoy or Bones, as we lovingly call him on “Star Trek,” always seemed to say … dammit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a computer programmer.

So here I sit, unable to browse the Web. Imagine that. I can write. I can send and receive email. I can even reach some websites pretty quickly. Not as quick as before, but at least I can reach them. However, the majority of websites I click on take a good several minutes to appear, bit by agonizingly slow bit.

Problem started with update

I think this is an Apple problem because of several reasons. One, it happened as soon as the update was complete. Two, it happened to two different MacBooks. Three, it happens on my home Internet connection, at the office, at Starbucks and so on. I think you get my point.

I know Apple is not perfect. No company is perfect. I am even told that I am not perfect. Yes, I have kids. However, the best way to solve this problem is to give the customer a chance to back away from the update and go back to the setup they had before.

Then at least I could use my computer while Apple tries to figure out which loose screw to tighten before I try this update again.

This is not the first meltdown with Apple that I have been through. I have them from time to time. However, before it was just with my iPhone or iPad. Now I have to deal with these meltdowns on my computer as well. So this impacts my ability to work, to research and to use the Internet. Help! There must be a solution! But I’ll be damned if I can figure it out.
