ETSI taps open source software for MANO specs

ETSI said it has tasked its OSM group to use open source software for MANO tied to NFV

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute this week said it have begun work on using open source software for management and orchestration of network functions virtualization in connection with its NFV Industry Specification Group.

The work will be conducted under the ETSI OSM group, tasked with delivering an open source MANO stack using “accepted open source tools and working procedures.” ETSI said the use of open source software in its MANO efforts will “provide practical and essential feedback to the ETSI NFV ISG and increase the likelihood of interoperability among NFV implementations.”

Founding members of the ETSI OSM include BT, Canonical, Intel, Mirantis, RIFT.io, Telefonica, Telekom Austria Group and Telenor.

“ETSI OSM complements the work of the ETSI NFV ISG and vice versa,” explained Luis Jorge Romero, director general at ETSI. “It will provide an opportunity to capitalize on the synergy between standardization and open source approaches by accessing a greater and more diverse set of contributors and developers than would normally be possible. This maximizes innovation, efficiency and time to market and ensures a continuing series of conformant reference implementations.”

ETSI tackled some MANO challenges last year as part of a release of 3 specifications focused on security and reliability. ETSI said the security aspect tackles OpenStack modules that provide security services, including authentication, authorization, confidentiality protection, integrity protection and logging, which is said help in the area of MANO.
