AT&T to offer unlimited U-verse data tied to DirecTV or extra fee option

AT&T next month plans to offer unlimited U-verse data for DirecTV customers as part of a revamp in U-verse broadband pricing

AT&T announced upcoming changes to its U-verse broadband service, including an unlimited data option and increased data allotments for current service tiers.

The telecom giant said beginning May 23, customers with stand alone U-verse home Internet service will be able to purchase an unlimited data option for $30 more per month. Customers signed up for AT&T’s DirecTV service will receive the unlimited U-verse data option for free in a move similar to the roll out earlier this year of an unlimited cellular data option for customers signed up for AT&T Mobility and DirecTV services.

Customers not wanting to pay the additional fee or passing on DirecTV are also set to see their current data bucket increased on May 23, with AT&T stating most customers will see their data buckets grow to a total of between 300 gigabytes and 1 terabyte depending on their Internet speed tier. The increased allotment comes with the caveat that customers going over their bucket will now be charged $10 for 50 GB of additional access up to a total of $100 in overage charges per month. The overage charge will not be implemented for the first three months, with AT&T stating customers can check their usage via online tools. AT&T claims its home Internet customers use “just over 100 GB of data per month on average.”

AT&T CFO John Stephens recently said the carrier had signed up 2 million customers to the unlimited cellular data packaged tied to DirecTV services, with most of the initial uptake coming from customers already signed up for AT&T Mobility cellular service or either its DirecTV or U-verse video service, through the carrier is now seeing net customer additions for those products.
