In a major expansion to its fiber network footprint, AT&T is planning to extend its GigaPower Internet service offering into parts of Southern Dallas. Once the area south of the Trinity River and Interstate 30 is hooked up to fiber, AT&T will have effectively doubled the availability of high-speed fiber-to-the-home in the city of more than 2.5 million people.
The initiative is called GrowSouth and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings called it an important “investment opportunity. Today, AT&T is seizing that opportunity by bringing its best product to Southern Dallas. This will not only benefit home services, it will enhance the way we communicate throughout this region of our city. The demand for speed and connectivity is continuously increasing, and today’s announcement reflects our commitment to support the ongoing public and private investment in the area.”
The top-end GigaPower offering costs $110 per month with speeds up to one gigabit per second. Tiered options begin at data speeds up to six megabits per second. The fiber network currently reaches 1.6 million premises in 22 metropolitan areas. In addition to the expansion plans in Dallas, AT&T plans to grow its GigaPower footprint in 34 new metro areas, eventually reaching some 14 million residential and business locations.
AT&T North Texas VP and GM Hardmon Williams III said fiber-enhanced Internet “will open up new possibilities for technology innovators and businesses, as well as for consumers who want faster speeds for surfing, shopping, gaming, social networking and more.”
