Telefonica to implement ThingWorx internet of things platform

Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica’s internet of things (IoT) business unit signed an agreement with global provider of technology platforms and solutions PTC to implement the latter’s ThingWorx IoT platform.

The Spanish telco said that ThingWorx will bring application development, connectivity and analytics capabilities to its Smart Device Service, which offers connected device enablement and management to enterprises. Both will be integrated with Telefonica’s Smart M2M managed connectivity platform, which gives customers visibility, control and management of the end to end solution.

This agreement will also provide Telefonica customers with access to fully integrated solutions and cloud-based deployment for applications and development, enabling them to reduce service downtime and optimize on-field intervention through remote detection and resolution of problems.

“This agreement positions Telefonica as one of the key players in the IoT arena providing first-class services to our worldwide customers. Furthermore, it complements our leading smart M2M solution, a best-in-class platform to manage and control IoT communications developed entirely by Telefonica,” Telefonica’s Chief IoT Officer Vicente Muñoz said.

ThingWorx bills its platform as “the only enterprise-ready platform that enables innovators to rapidly develop and deploy smart, connected solutions for the internet of things. ThingWorx contains the most complete set of integrated IoT-specific development tools and capabilities making solution development simple, time-to-market fast and solutions built on the platform more compelling.”

The platform includes functionality to connect IoT devices, run data analytics and simulations, develop IoT applications, integrate augmented reality and a collaborative development environment.
