Intel to position itself as a leader within smart building technologies as it showcases a new SaaS smart building management platform.
Smart building technologies are set to transform the facilities industry, as building data is transformed into actionable information and automatization helps optimize the operations of building systems. Navigant Research estimates that the smart building technology market will generate global revenues of $8.5 billion in 2020, up from $4.7 billion in 2016, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.9 percent over the forecast period.?The three key technologies included in the forecast are smart building energy management systems (BEMS) software and services, advanced sensors, and electricity submeters.
Intel has every intention to take on a leadership role in this growing market as it showcases, together with partners including Comfy,?EnTouch and?Lucid, a number of smart building solutions at the upcoming IBcon2016 conference in San Jose, California at the end of June. ?Intel IoT, with its ecosystem partners, is making an impact in this space from smart building energy management and predictive maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and other building systems to overall building safety and security,? said Intel?s Smart Building Solutions director Cristina Boles.
According to the company, IoT solutions have matured and moved from hype to real-world applications, delivering real value in terms of cost savings and energy gains. At IBcon2016, Intel will be demonstrating Intel BMP, a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) building management platform aimed at solutions providers in the small-and medium-size buildings market segment. The platform gives applications secure and seamless access to connected things and the data they generate within smart buildings by connecting building systems and sensors. The platform reduces time to market?for solution providers, according to Intel. ?This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform reduces development time and effort for solution providers by offering a pre-integrated building management platform to allow them to deploy a wide range of applications,? said Cristina Boles.
Use cases for Intel BMP include connecting users to building through intelligent sensors and GPS features, using biometrics for identification instead of swipe cards, equipping conference rooms with smart features such as smart charging tables, a more intelligent use of heating, lighting and cooling or conserving water while preparing in advance for rainfall.
As smart building management solutions get rolled out, data will play a key role. Navigant Research expects global building data integration revenue to reach $971.3 million in 2025.??For years, data-integrated buildings have shown promise in reducing energy and operational costs, especially as regulatory energy efficiency pressures and corporate sustainability strategies increase customer demand for data-driven solutions,? says Alvin Chen, research analyst with Navigant Research. ?However, the analytics software to effectively provide actionable insights is still being developed to deliver on this promise.?
Details on the availability of Intel BMP will be announced later in the year.

Smart city: Manchester partners with Cisco on smart cities, IoT
As the latest step in its country digitization agenda and support of UK and digital growth, Cisco has entered a partnership with Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP) to accelerate digital innovation in the North of England. Together, the partners will open the Mi-Idea (Manchester Inspired ? Innovation Digital Enterprise Alliance) innovation centre on MSP?s central campus. Mi-Idea will work with startups and focus on smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), digital healthcare and the digital creative sector. ?Mi-IDEA is a reflection of our long-term commitment to growing the digital technology sector in the region and the culmination of our partnership work with Cisco since the National Virtual Incubator was launched in 2012. In high growth sectors it’s vital to provide targeted and specialist support programmes with access to global supply chains in order to unlock the potential economic impact for the UK. Bringing together diverse partners from across public, private and academic sectors to drive innovation and economic growth is at the heart of MSP and a hugely rewarding endeavour. We are excited to see this project come to fruition,? said Anne Dornan, head of Innovation at Manchester Science Partnerships. Cisco announced in July 2015 it intended to invest $1 billion in the UK over the subsequent three to five years. Mi-Idea is expected to start operations early in 2017.
Smart city: City of Palo Alto expands pedestrian and bicycle counting project
After completing a pilot test of Vimoc?s application for bicycle and pedestrian counting, the city of Palo Alto, California, has now expanded the initiative, adding 45 count stations across the city. The implementation aims to help measure the efficacy of city programs that encourage citizens to reduce personal automobile usage. “These sensors and the data they collect provide an unprecedented view of city activity. While making sure to protect the privacy of people, this data has the potential to assist with city planning efforts and to inform a wide range of future decisions,? said Dr. Jonathan Reichental, chief information officer for the City of Palo Alto.
Connected car: Savari to accelerate safety app adoption with new V2X solutions
Savari launched a set of V2X solutions aimed at accelerating adoption of safety apps in connected and self-driving cars. The V2X solutions include a new generation of Mobiwave on-board units (OBUs), Streetwave road-side units (RSUs) as well as V2X middleware. ?Our next-generation on-board units, road-side units and intelligent transportation applications leverage the latest, advanced technologies combined with V2X expertise that spans eight years of collaboration with the USDOT and several transportation departments, automakers and tier one suppliers from around the world. As cities increasingly look to deploy smart infrastructure and manufacturers add V2X technology to their vehicles, there’s no ceiling to how many people will be touched by our technology,” said Ravi Puvvala, CEO at Savari. The products target automotive manufacturers, tier one suppliers and governments.
Today?s forecast: $1 trillion will be spent globally on cybersecurity from 2017 to 2021
Cybersecurity Ventures forecasts that global spending on cybersecurity products and services will reach $1 trillion from 2017 through 2021, topping many other analysts? predictions. ?IT analyst forecasts are unable to keep pace with the dramatic rise in cybercrime, the ransonware epidemic, the refocusing of malware from PCs and laptops to smartphones and mobile devices, the deployment of billions of under-protected Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the legions of hackers-for-hire, and the more sophisticated cyber-attacks launching at businesses, governments, educational institutions, and consumers globally,? said ?Steve Morgan, founder and editor-in-chief at Cybersecurity Ventures.
