Cloud RAN solution to be deployed by operators in Q2 2017

SHANGHAI – Chinese vendor ZTE Corporation launched its newest generation radio access network solution – ZTE Cloud RAN – during Mobile World Congress Shanghai.
Designed to reconstruct the wireless network based on the cloud processing platform, ZTE Cloud RAN will allow telecommunications operators to deploy networks and develop new business cases using the new concept. The solution is designed to help operators fully meet future performance challenges and versatile service requirements.
ZTE Cloud RAN, based on the unified M-ICT platform, is a fully virtual RAN platform, integrating all modes of access including 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, the “internet of things” and “5G,” as well as support for a massive number of connections. In addition, ZTE Cloud RAN is based on platform-as-a-service architecture providing open interfaces for third parties, which enables operators to quickly deploy various services in volatile circumstances.
The Chinese company said 5G technologies present new challenges for the RAN, such as processing performance, coordination capability and service deployment. A 5G RAN is therefore required to continue evolving its architecture for the diverse use cases of the future to achieve a seamless transition from 4G to 5G.
ZTE also said it has signed strategic agreements with Chinese and global customers to commercially deploy the ZTE Cloud RAN solution in the second quarter of 2017.
In related news, ZTE’s president, Zhao Xianming, highlighted the company’s IoT strategy.
During a keynote presentation at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, the executive said potential challenges to IoT adoption include difficulties with existing network infrastructure and access modes, the need to accommodate exponential connection growth, and the diverse requirements for delay, bandwidth and reliability. Zhao outlined ZTE’s plans to help the industry overcome these obstacles through the deployment of innovative solutions including 5G.
“The IoT has created significant progress in intelligent manufacturing, smart cities, intelligent transportation and smart homes. Various innovative IoT applications will soon emerge. We’re at the eve of a powerful new IoT-enabled revolution in business and as a global society,” he said. “All parties across the industrial chain have a collaborative, cooperative role to play in promoting the healthy development of the IoT industry.”
