International expansion continues for FreedomPop, which launched its free MVNO service in Spain to claims of strong demand
U.S.-based mobile virtual network operator FreedomPop continued its international expansion, announcing the availability of service in Spain.
The operator, which launched its MVNO service in 2012, said its mobile service will now work in Spain, providing customers with access to various rate plans. The offer is available via a first-come, first-served order basis, with the company claiming more than 100,000 have signed up for its beta service over the past two months.
The company’s most touted plan is its “free” service, which includes 100 voice calling minutes, 300 text messages, 200 megabytes of cellular data and WhatsApp access. As part of a launch promotion, customers can receive unlimited voice calls, text messages and two gigabytes of cellular data free for the first month.
FreedomPop is also now allowing customers to share their unused data with others, or if out of data customers can “request” data from other users. The company also is providing 20 MB of free data per month for each new customer referred to the service.
“We want to provide a path to unlimited free data,” said FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols in a statement. “Giving users the option to earn free data as well as get data from friends with extra means they have the opportunity to use as much data as they want and never pay a penny.”
Stokols was recently a guest on the RCR Wireless News Carrier Wrap show, where he provided more insight into the company’s operations.
As for its paid offerings, FreedomPop said customers can purchase buckets of 200 voice calling minutes, 500 text messages and 1 GB of data; unlimited voice calls, text messages and 2 GB of data; unlimited voice calls, text messages and 5 GB of data; or unlimited voice calls, text messages and 10 GB of data.
FreedomPop earlier this year launched its Global hot spot option, which it said taps cellular networks from various operators to provide a “seamless data connection for free.” The free data allotment amounts to 200 MB, with additional cellular data access priced at $10 per 500 MB.
