Countering similar promotions from T-Mobile and AT&T, Sprint customers traveling to Brazil to have unlimited ‘high-speed’ data throughout August
Sprint is the latest domestic carrier to launch a new promotion targeting the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
The carrier said domestic customers traveling to the games will have access to unlimited “high-speed” data in Brazil throughout August, though with the fine print stating “primary usage must occur on the U.S. Sprint network” and “service may be terminated or restricted for excessive international use.”
Also, customers must be on the Sprint Open World plan, which is available at no charge for postpaid customers, and have a roaming capable device. Those customers also will have access to the plan’s regular unlimited calling and text messaging features, with the data bonus over the standard 1 gigabyte of unthrottled usage.
Sprint launched the Open World feature last summer, which took aim at similar offers provided by rivals T-Mobile US, AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless.
Specific to the Olympics, Sprint’s move followed one by T-Mobile US, which is offering free high-speed data, calls from Brazil back to the U.S. and text messaging for its postpaid customers. In a move specifically targeting Olympic athletes, T-Mobile US said it is offering free service running across a free Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge device and a free Gear 360 camera for athletes and their families through October.
AT&T, which is an official sponsor of the Olympics, kicked off the promos with an offer to its postpaid customers of 1 GB of cellular data, access to more than 1,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in Brazil, 30 minutes of voice calling and unlimited text messaging for $50 per month.
