Verizon boosts data to counter T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T pressure

A new promotion offers up 2 GB per line of shareable data for Verizon Wireless customers selecting higher-tiered buckets

Just weeks after thoroughly revamping its data buckets, Verizon Wireless is already throwing more data at consumers looking to either switch or upgrade.
The carrier said customers will receive 2 gigabytes of additional data per line per month if they select a new line of service or upgrade to at least the “large” version of the new rate plans. The plan pre-promotion includes 8 GB of shareable data along with unlimited voice calling and text messaging.
The new promotion labels the offer as providing 16 GB of shareable data for four lines of service – including the $20 per device access fee – for $150 per month. The package is priced at a $30 premium compared to a current T-Mobile US four-line promotion providing 6 GB of nonshareable data per line, but comes in $10 less per month than an AT&T Mobility shareable data plan that includes 15 GB of data.
Verizon Wireless early last month altered its postpaid rate plans, adjusting data bucket sizes and pricing that resulted in higher per-month fees, but a lower per-GB price point. The move also included the availability of a “Carryover Data” option for all data buckets; a “Safety Mode” that curtails network speeds should customers exceed their data bucket allowance, which is standard on XL and XXL data plans, and a $5 upcharge for smaller data buckets; and the inclusion of roaming into Canada and Mexico on XL and XXL plans, or as a $5 per month option on smaller plans.
The new plans were not without controversy as the carrier came back a day after launch with an attempt to clear up “myths” on the new rate plans, which generated headlines as a price increase from the carrier.
Verizon Wireless late last month posted lower than expected second-quarter customer growth, which failed to meet forecasts and was nearly half of what the carrier posted for the same quarter last year.
