T-Mobile and Sprint boost Lansing in latest RootMetrics market test

Boosted by strong network data speed performance from T-Mobile and Sprint, the Michigan market surged to the top in the latest RootMetrics test

RootMetrics crowned a new market winner in its latest ranking of cellular network performance across the nation’s 125 largest markets, although the bottom of the list remained the same.
According to cellular network performance testing conducted through the first half of this year, Lansing, Michigan, was deemed to have the best overall performing networks with a RootMetrics score of 98.5. Lansing, which finished No. 14 in network testing conducted in the second half of last year, topped specific testing segments in reliability and call performance, and was No. 2 in network speed, data and text messaging performance.
Specific to carrier performance in the market, RootMetrics said median download speeds were “strong overall,” with T-Mobile US posting an overall testing top median speed of 41.5 megabits per second in the market and Sprint posting a median speed of 15.5 Mbps.
Next to Lansing, Indianapolis slotted in at No. 2 with a score of 98.2, improving one position from the previous test, with Atlanta No. 3 with a score of 97.9. Atlanta, which was No. 1 in the last RootMetrics report, did garner a top placing in network speed and data performance, boosted by strong Verizon Wireless median speeds of 33.6 Mbps on the downlink and 23.6 Mbps on the uplink.
Julie Dey, VP at RootMetrics, recently explained the company’s testing methodology in an interview for the RCR Wireless News Carrier Wrap show.

At the other end of the scale, Hudson Valley, New York, and Omaha, Nebraska, continued to bring up the rear in RootMetrics testing. The Hudson Valley area saw its overall score dip from 90.5 in the previous testing to 88.1 in the latest round, while Omaha slipped from a score of 91.5 to 91.3. Blocked calls were cited as a significant influence for both markets, with T-Mobile US recording the “two highest blocked call rates of any carrier in this round of testing” at 12.3% in Omaha and 6.9% in Hudson Valley.
RootMetrics is expected to soon release carrier-specific results from its latest testing round, though early indications are that Verizon Wireless will again top the rankings ahead of AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US and Sprint.
