Nokia and Sonera, the Finnish arm of Nordic telecoms operator Telia Company, carried out a trial of 5G mobile networking and new copper cable technologies capable of delivering data speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
The trial in August was built around a 5G-ready network using the commercially available Nokia AirScale Base Station and a core network solution. The 5G network was used to deliver, among other things, high-resolution video footage shot using OZO, Nokia’s professional-grade virtual reality camera.
Sonera also tested Nokia’s XG-FAST solution, the fixed broadband technology developed by Nokia Bell Labs which allows existing copper cables to deliver high-speed fixed broadband.
Deutsche Telekom, Huawei hit 1.2 Gbps in LTE-A demo
German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom and Chinese vendor Huawei carried out a live demonstration in Berlin, achieving data throughput of 1.22 Gbps via mobile radio technology.
Deutsche Telekom and Huawei used LTE Advanced Pro technology with a conventional mobile base station, which was bundled with a small cell solution. The European telco said that the data traffic flowed over five carrier frequencies.
“User behavior is evolving rapidly on the way to a gigabit society. That’s why fast Internet access can’t be limited to just fixed lines and fiber optics – our customers also want the highest possible speeds for maximum comfort on the go as well. As you can see, our network delivers,” sayd Claudia Nemat, Deutsche Telekom AG’s Board Member for Europe and Technology. “We are ahead of our time and ahead of the competition.
“Huawei strongly believes in the best user experience as the foundation for the successful future of Deutsche Telekom. Together we innovate for the advanced wireless technology and Huawei is happy to support Deutsche Telekom to prove the benefits of the latest evolutionary step of this technology, LTE Advanced Pro, in real field application”, Lin Baifeng, President Huawei Deutsche Telekom Key Account, said.
The telco ended June with 41.3 million mobile customers in the German market. In Europe – excluding Germany – Deutsche Telekom had 52.2 million mobile subscribers at the end of June. In the US, Deutsche Telekom controls mobile operator T-Mobile US, which ended the second quarter with 67.3 million customers.
