Edinburgh Airport, the busiest airport in Scotland, partnered with BlipTrack to use sensors and give its travelers visibility of real-time wait duration throughout the airport, including the dreaded security line.
The airport serviced 11 million travelers last year and is nearing 12 million this year. In July 2016, the airport reported the busiest-ever month after seeing 1,332,282 travelers through its doors – an increase of 9.6% on the same month last year. Because of the heavy traffic, it is crucial that their logistics are accurate and synchronized throughout the airport to keep travel on-time and convenient, according to Blip.
Because of the increasing number of people entering its doors, Edinburgh Airport partnered with Denmark-based BLIP Systems to design and implement the BlipTrack solution to help measure and handle passenger numbers smoothly and efficiently at security lines.
“With BlipTrack we are able to keep our passengers fully informed 24/7 – both in the terminal and online – about what to expect at security,” said Adrian Witherow, chief operating officer at Edinburgh Airport. “At peak times, up to 3,000 passengers an hour travel through security and our aim is to make that experience as smooth as possible whilst ensuring safety – BLIP Systems helps us do that.”
The solution provides the airport with detailed information about passengers’ queue times and how they move around the airport. The data gives the airport a picture on trends and patterns and how everything is performing. It allows the airport to respond if lines are becoming congested to ultimately reduce processing times. In addition, it also enables the airport to provide optimum service by displaying wait times on signs in the airport and on their website, thereby reducing passengers’ frustration by creating realistic wait time expectations.
“In order to improve traveler satisfaction, comply with service-level agreements and evaluate key performance indicators, it is important that airport managers are able to measure passenger queue and flow and subsequently improve waiting times,” said Christian Bugislaus Carstens, marketing manager at BLIP Systems. “With our fourth UK installation, we are confident that BlipTrack also will be successful in providing Edinburgh Airport with all the necessary data to both optimize processes and improve the passenger experience.”
Edinburgh joins a host of other leading international airports, including JFK, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Dublin, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Auckland, Keflavik and Oslo, who are displaying real-time wait times using the BlipTrack solution.
