Samsung, MTS ink agreement to collaborate on 5G, IoT and MIMO technologies

The deal between the Korean giant and the Russian telco includes 5G, IoT and MIMO technologies

Samsung Electronics and Russian telecom operator Mobile TeleSystems signed a memorandum of understanding to explore and develop new technologies, including “5G,” the “internet of things” and multiple-input/multiple-output antenna technologies.

Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will focus on advanced carrier aggregation, MIMO, LTE Broadcast, multipath Transmission Control Protocol and IoT technologies such as narrowband-IoT and LTE-Machine. The MoU stipulates the two companies will carry out multiple tests to enhance data communication speed, leveraging “4G” infrastructure through advanced carrier aggregation, MIMO and MPTCP.

“Samsung is pleased to sign this MoU with MTS as it proves our successful partnership around LTE. We are confident that this collaboration will play a key role in leveraging advanced technologies to bring everyday benefit to the lives of Russians,” said Dong Soo Park, EVP of the networks business at Samsung Electronics. “Based on Samsung’s strengths in 5G and IoT, we look forward to supporting MTS in solidifying its position as an innovative telecommunications leader by discovering new opportunities for the commercialization of 5G.”

Samsung and MTS also will cooperate to pave the way toward 5G technology through the implementation of future 5G trials.

“MTS is consecutively working on preparation of its network in Russian regions for 5G technology deployment, and signing this memorandum with Samsung is another important step on that way,” noted Andrei Ushatskiy, VP of technology at MTS. “Commercial deployment of new technologies, including an area of IoT, will make it possible for us to occupy new market niche in both corporate and mass market domains.”

Samsung and MTS have been working together since 2013 to establish LTE networks in cities across the Northwest Federal District of Russia, including St. Petersburg, Leningrad, Pskov, Komi, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk, among others. MTS provides wireless internet access and fixed voice, broadband and pay-TV services to more than 100 million customers in Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Turkmenistan and Belarus.
