Called Luca, the big data unit offers three lines of business
Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica launched a new big data services unit as part of the telco’s strategy to become a data-driven company.
The new unit, dubbed Luca, will enable companies, public institutions and all kinds or organizations to take advantage of the benefits offered by big data, the telco said.
“Data is a critical asset for the future of Telefónica and any organization. With Telefónica’s fundamental promise to always maintain privacy, security and the transparent use of the data we want to help our clients understand its full potential, Telefonica’s Chief Data Officer Chema Alonso said.
“Big data has helped us at Telefónica, and we strongly believe it will help our clients in decision-making, more efficient resource management and in returning the benefits of this wealth of information not only to their clients and direct users, but also to society,” he said.
The new unit will offer three main lines of business. Business Insights will provide companies with anonymous, aggregated data collected by Telefonica’s networks. Synergic Partners, a big data specialist acquired by Telefonica in 2015, will be responsible for delivering Luca’s analytical and consultancy services for Spanish and international customers. Additionally, Luca will also offer big data as a service (BdaaS), giving enterprises the means to make better use of their own data, using Telefonica’s cloud infrastructure.
Telefonica also said that the Luca’s portfolio of products and services will be taken to market by the different business units in different countries across the Telefónica footprint.
Telefonica upgrades virtual data center solution with VMWare
In related news, Telefónica has evolved its Virtual Data Center (VDC) solution, using VMware vSphere, VMware vCenter and VMware vCloud Director. The Spanish telco said that this solution is available in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, adding the U.S. to its global coverage.
VDC is an infrastructure-as-a-service cloud solution implemented on completely private communications that provides a comprehensive solution for the deployment of infrastructures on a flexible and resilient platform with full security guarantees.
In addition, Telefónica and VMware are working to develop a centralized management model that will enable VDC customers to manage the cloud infrastructure deployed in their various local nodes, as well as their international cloud connectivity services through a single portal.
