Huawei is planning a commercial trial of NB-IoT in Q4
Huawei announced the large-scale commercialization of its end-to-end narrowband “internet of things” solution will take place starting next year.
The Chinese vendor said its NB-IoT solution is designed to help global operators expand services into new markets. Huawei reps said the solution was made available on a small scale in September, and it plans to conduct a large commercial trial in the fourth quarter of this year.
The vendor’s end-to-end solution includes the Smart Device solution enabled by Huawei LiteOS and chipset; ENodeB base stations designed to support NB-IoT technology; IoT packet core that supports flexible deployment of core-in-a-box and network functions virtualization; and a cloud-based IoT Connection Management Platform with big data capabilities.
“NB-IoT has unique advantages in supporting IoT applications. Huawei will help carriers accelerate the commercial adoption of NB-IoT and the maturing of the industry chain,” said Jiang Wangcheng, VP of marketing and solutions at Huawei.
Huawei recently launched SoftRadio, a software suite designed to allow developers to access NB-IoT open labs via the internet for remote innovation and commissioning.
The company also announced a partnership with system integrator SCC France. Under the terms of the partnership, both firms will focus on IoT, network and security and cloud products for the public sector, education and health care.
M1, Nokia carry out NB-IoT demo in Singapore
Nokia and Singapore mobile operator M1 carried out what they claim to be the country’s first live NB-IoT demonstration.
The demo, which took place at M1’s networks lab, simulated an environmental monitoring telemetry service using a remote room temperature and humidity sensor application that collected and shared data via NB-IoT connectivity. Another demo used three robots with “5G” connectivity to show the benefits of low latency (less than 1 millisecond) provided by 5G networks in mission-critical applications.
The two companies are currently deploying a nationwide network, which is expected to be operational in 2017.
In August, Nokia and M1 announced Singapore’s first heterogeneous network commercial deployment. The Asian telco said it will progressively roll out an overlay of integrated Nokia’s Flexi Zone small cells and Wi-Fi equipment across hundreds of high-traffic hot spots nationwide to complement its LTE-based network.
