ONUG set to invest in cloud, analytics and monitoring

Open Networking User Group states plans for significant investment into cloud, analytics and monitoring, formation of ONUG Lab

The Open Networking User Group came out of its recent trade event with new momentum behind plans for the formation of $1 billion cloud-based infrastructure analytic applications and further monitoring initiatives.

Moving on plans begun earlier this year focused on open IT frameworks, ONUG said its Open Traffic Management Format initiative set forth a multivendor monitoring architecture and Open Network State Format initiative called for the creation of a new market for analytics applications to exploit next generation monitoring. The focus of the initiatives is said to now center on “creating market conditions to enable a thriving ecosystem of open, closed and homegrown software,” with the planned ecosystem encompassing “public and private cloud and will deliver automation, orchestration, and tools to engineer and operationalize today’s highly integrated best of breed solutions.”

In promoting what it calls the “analytics and monitoring 2.0 market,” ONUG formed its ONUG Lab, tasked with providing a proof-of-concept by building a multivendor monitoring infrastructure allowing companies, academics and the open source community to develop analytic applications addressing software-managed infrastructure.

“Cloudification across public and private infrastructure is fundamental to compete in the digitally transformed economy, but there are significant obstacles for companies to fully embrace this open IT framework approach,” said Nick Lippis, co-chairman and co-founder of ONUG, in a statement. “The ONUG community is cognizant of the fundamental business, technology and cultural shifts in moving organizations to the digitally transformed era. In response, ONUG is leading a movement to create a new market that provides engineers and operational teams with tools to enable faster solution integration and agility.”

RCR Wireless News earlier this year spoke with Lippis on the organization’s efforts in serving as the enterprise voice in the continued push towards virtualized platforms.

ONUG was formed in 2012, with an initial focus on membership from a number of financial institutions, including Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan Chase and UBS. The organization focuses on an open cloud infrastructure and providing members with insight into deployment opportunities using software-defined networking platforms.

ONUG members include Cisco, Glue Networks, NetScout, NTT Innovation Institute, Nuage Networks, Verizon Communications and Versa Networks, among others.
