Telefonica taps Astellia for RAN optimization program

Astellia claims its Nova RAN platform can help Telefonica geolocate high ARPU customers in move to optimize network investment and performance.

Telefonica continued its push to modernize network operations, signing a three-year pact with Astellia, which provides network and subscriber intelligence platforms for mobile operators.

The move will see Telefonica Spain implement Astellia’s Nova RAN 3G and 4G optimization solution, which is designed to use analytics to prioritize network investments and improve network coverage, capacity and performance. Astellia said the platform can geolocate high average revenue per user customers, which allows mobile operators to garner insight for plans to target network investments and performance optimization.

“Nova RAN’s advanced predictive algorithms distinguish indoor/outdoor, static/mobility calls (high-speed train, motorways), and coverage and traffic hot spots,” Astellia explained. “This information can also be used to improve network planning by recommending additional small cells for instance.”

Astellia earlier this year launched a virtualized version of its RAN platform.

ABI Research earlier this year noted the RAN optimization market generated more than $4 billion in revenues in 2015, with forecasts that the market would reach $6.3 billion in 2020. Growth is expected to be driven by increased adoption of the technology in developing markets, notably Latin America.

“Out of the six solutions addressed, we expect automatic cell planning to grow the fastest, increasing by more than 18% year-on-year by 2020,” said Lian Jye Su, research analyst at ABI Research. “Traditional optimization solutions, such as RF and KPI optimization and performance management, will start to decline in 2017, and be replaced by more automated solutions, such as automatic cell planning and self-organizing network.”

The research firm cited Ericsson and Nokia as large players in the RAN optimization space, with Ericsson bolstered through a partnership with Cisco, and Nokia gaining a boost from its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent.

Telefonica has signed a number of vendor contracts targeting the launch of “5G” services, including deals with Ericsson, ZTE and Huawei. The company more recently signed a deal with Nokia to deploy the vendor’s virtualized router technology in a live network to support the carrier’s enterprise offerings.
