The deployment is part of AT&T’s Smart Cities spotlight city pilot
U.S. company CIVIQ Smartscapes announced the upcoming deployment of its unified smart city solution in the City of Chicago as part of a larger plan to implement smart cities technologies.
The company said that as part of AT&T’s Smart Cities spotlight city pilot, it will initially install CIVIQ Waypoint devices in downtown Chicago that will provide high-speed public Wi-Fi. The deployment will also enable CIVIQ’s Mobility Experience (CME), a solution that connects devices, people and services to deliver citizen engagement and improved city services.
The deployment of Waypoint devices connected to the city of Chicago will enable the provision of a number of services including wayfinding, interactive information about transportation services, safety alerts and free Wi-Fi.

Nokia launches LTE/3G wireless router for utilities
In related news, Finnish vendor Nokia has launched the 7705 SAR-Hm, a LTE/3G wireless router aimed at modernizing distribution networks for utilities, but with clear applications for other high-growth vertical markets, like smart cities.
The newest addition to the Nokia Service Routing portfolio merges IP/MPLS and LTE/3G technologies to provide utilities wireless connectivity for grid devices located deep in a highly scalable distribution network.
This allows for promising new smart grid applications, including distribution automation, advanced metering, and integration of renewable energy sources, and lays the groundwork to support an anticipated massive increase in field devices with the Internet of Things (IoT).
Ideal for power utilities, the Nokia 7705 SAR-Hm is also available for other industry sectors requiring wireless connectivity of IP/MPLS services for field operations, including oil and gas, mining, public safety, government, transportation and aviation.
