The platform also supports machine-type communications and includes a new 3GPP Cellular IoT feature.
Nokia announced its Cloud Packet Core now supports converged broadband, internet of things and machine-type communications service delivery across wireless licensed, shared and unlicensed spectrum, and fixed access.
Broadband, IoT and MTC is set to lead to an increase in devices and people that must be interconnected, introducing a range of service requirements and characteristics operators will need to support, including any access technology, the vendor said.
Nokia’s Cloud Packet Core also includes a Third Generation Partnership Project R13 Cellular IoT feature set and capabilities, such as the CIoT Serving Gateway Node, to support new service and application requirements, including narrowband IoT. The vendor’s solutions also includes pre-integrated and modular Cloud Packet Core solutions such as the Cloud Mobility Manager and the Cloud Mobile Gateway.
Nokia said the Cloud Packet Core will create significant broadband business opportunities and support diverse applications for multiple segments and verticals, including consumer mobile, residential, enterprises and governments.
Study reveals global IoT devices will reach 8.4 billion this year
The total number of IoT devices is expected to reach 8.4 billion units worldwide this year and 20.4 billion units by 2020, according to a recent report by Gartner.
Gartner said growth this year will be dominated by the consumer market, which will account for 5.2 billion units. By 2020, Gartner forecasts the number of consumer devices will reach 12.9 billion units, while the number of enterprise-related devices will total 7.4 billion units.
“Aside from automotive systems, the applications that will be most in use by consumers will be smart TVs and digital set-top boxes, while smart electric meters and commercial security cameras will be most in use by businesses,” said Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner.
