MWC 2017 Video Wrap: Reality check for IoT and 5G

More realistic expectations and real-world use cases highlighted significant action around 5G and IoT at this week’s Mobile World Congress event.

With this week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain, in full swing, we figured it would be a good time to dissect some of the news coming out of the event in video form. Join us know as RCR Wireless News editors take a look at some of the bigger items from the early part of MWC.

RCR Wireless News Managing Editor Sean Kinney provided his “in-the-scene” take from this year’s Mobile World Congress event, highlighting what he noted was a more reality based mindset from both the people in attendance and news coming from the event tied to “5G” and the internet of things.

Kinney explained that while both of those topics were also top of mind from last year’s MWC event, there was a lack of any real-world connections as both 5G and IoT were still relatively new to the scene and thus were being filled with overwhelming expectations.

However, at this year’s show, Kinney noted talk on the topics was more focused, with a number of operator and vendors discussing real-world use cases for 5G and IoT deployments, which added a layer of modesty to the surroundings.

Kinney also cited the growing push behind advances to the current LTE standard designed to bolster network capacity and throughput towards what’s being termed “gigabit LTE” territory as indicating the industry is not ready to sit back and wait for 5G and instead looks set to continue striving for higher performing networks.
