Panel: 5G for IoT – Applications and use cases
Moderator Dan Meyer, Editor-in-Chief at RCR Wireless News is joined by Peter de Nagy, President, Acommence Advisors and Tri-Chair, Tech Titans IoT Forum (Tech Assoc of North Texas); Jake MacLeod, President and CEO, GreyBeards Consulting, Caroline Chan, VP, GM 5G infrastructure Division; Nadine Manjaro, Lead IoT Consultant, InterDigital and Neville Meijers, Vice President, Business Development, Qualcomm Technologies Inc to discuss applications and use cases of 5G technologies for IoT.
Neville Meijers believes that NB-IoT technology will be a critical part of 5G. “The ability to support ultra-dense deployments will be one of the foundations of 5G IoT. Also, on the wide-band side we see ultra-low latency and ultra-reliability as two critical aspects that 5G brings which would fundamentally change the way we see wireless technologies being leveraged in industrial IoT environments.”
Peter de Nagy believes that 5G from a business model prospective is going to change the way businesses work. “5G technologies will also change the way the consumer operate, consumer technologies. This technology will change every part of our lives. Think of the value proposition of having instant connection wherever you are. I also see a huge value proposition coming in the B2B space, mainly for autonomous vehicles and vehicle-to-vehicle communications,” the executive said.
Meanwhile, Caroline Chan said that 5G, from the network infrastructure side, brings a unique perspective to Internet of Things unlike before. Chan said that network slicing will also benefit companies willing to launch several services using different slices of the 5G network.
Nadine Manjaro also highlighted that 5G will allow for the provision of specific customized services, especially in the QoS and the latency requirements. “In the IoT space you have many different devices, you have smart cities, you have first responders looking at this technology to optimize the way they do their job. So, being able to get real-time situational awareness I think it is the big key and that is going to be relying on QoS as well as the low latency networks that 5G will enable,” she added.
Jake MacLeod said that it is key to understand that the concept of 5G is more than a generational change. “5G will last longer than the normal 12-year generational cycle. Right now, we are building the foundations for 5G, with NFV, SDN, NFD and SON.”
MacLeod also said that there should not be any hesitation to continue developing applications for 5G technologies despite the fact that the standardization of this technology is expected for 2020.
