Ericsson said it completed the first demonstration of “5G” technology in Indonesia, including a 5G test bed, 5G New Radio and use cases such as a motion-sensing robotic arm and live 4K video streaming. The demonstration is said to have achieved a peak downlink speed of 5.74 gigabits per second and latency as low as three milliseconds.
“For operators, 5G has the potential to offer 34% growth in revenues in 2026 compared to 2016,” said Thomas Jul, head of Ericsson Indonesia, in a statement. “Meanwhile, consumers will be able to enjoy new applications like augmented reality and 4K video streaming and industries will benefit from innovative [internet of things] applications such as smart transport and remote health care, creating significant opportunities. With 5G expected to be introduced around 2020 globally, Ericsson sees the need to support the government, telecom operators and industries in Indonesia to prepare for the launch of this next-generation technology.”
Ericsson said its 5G test bed included all functionality required for precommercial trials and support for beamforming and tracking, multi-user multiple-input/multiple-output antenna technology, multisite transmission and dynamic time-division duplexing.
Demonstrations during the three-day event included radio system evolution, industrialized cloud, connected industries and digital business solutions, Ericsson said.

India’s Reliance Jio extends free mobile services for another three months
Indian mobile telephony operator Reliance Jio extended its free mobile service promotion until the end of June 2017. The operator’s offer includes free voice, data and Jio apps to both new and existing customers. After that date, Reliance Jio said it plans to charge only for data, with free voice and text messaging.
The disruptive Indian telco has been offering free voice, messaging and data since last September, causing a fierce price war and setting off a wave of consolidation in the Indian mobile telecommunications market.
Bharti Airtel recently agreed to buy Telenor’s Indian business as well as 4G spectrum held by Tikona. Recent joint ventures were announced by Vodafone India and Idea Cellular as well as Reliance Communications and Aircel.
