The new offering enables fuel and temperature management, maintenance, logistics and regulatory compliance for refrigerated assets
U.S. provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) solutions, Orbcomm launched a cold chain monitoring solution, which is available as a 3G or LTE cellular or dual-mode satellite-cellular version. The new solution is billed as enabling fuel and temperature management, maintenance, logistics and regulatory compliance for refrigerated transport assets like food.
The new solution, which is part of the company’s telematics suite that includes sensors, connectivity and the CargoWatch application, enables complete visibility and control of cold chain operations to help ensure the integrity of temperature-controlled cargo as it moves along the supply chain. Orbcomm’s new management solution provides the precise temperature monitoring capabilities and records needed for compliance with the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act regulatory requirements.
The company said the solution can remotely set reefer temperature, change reefer state, initiate a defrost, among other features. It can also receive real-time alarms when specific conditions are detected, such as an active reefer is turned off, cargo area temperature deviates from the set points or does not match values specified by the order, an asset enters or exits a geofence, and rapid fuel loss is detected.
The device also supports up to three temperature sensors to accommodate reefers with multiple zones and has a rechargeable battery that reports for up to 10 days on a single charge when no vehicle power is available.
“In refrigerated trucking, it is critical for fleet owners to be compliant with the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act, and Orbcomm’s technology provides the end-to-end visibility and control to meet these regulatory requirements and ensure the highest level of service throughout the cold chain,” said Craig Malone, Orbcomm’s executive vice president of product development. “We continue to see a migration toward IoT technology as part of our transportation customers’ core strategies to reduce costs and add efficiencies, and we are pleased to be the solution provider of choice for some of the biggest names in the industry.”
