Huawei to invest $200 million for telco digital transformation

New Huawei unit is already working with operators in Asia, Africa and the Middle East

HONG KONG–Huawei Global Technical Services (GTS) focuses on the provision of expertise and service solutions for operators willing to implement digital transformation strategies. According to the Chinese vendor, operators embracing digital transformation need to redefine business processes and business models, which can be a challenging process for telcos.

Huawei has been evolving its own Global Technical Services business to facilitate operators’ transformation. This unit has been recently developing new platforms and recruiting talent to sustain competitiveness. Huawei’s GTS is also investing in digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cloud and big data to enhance services capabilities across its organization, Bill Tang, president of Huawei Global Technical services, told reporters during Huawei’s Operations Transformation Forum, which takes place this week in Hong Kong.

The executive said that these capabilities help customers overcome their transformation challenges, develop integrated solutions, optimize ROI and achieve new business growth.

Tang also said that Huawei’s GTS will also focus on consulting and systems integration. The new unit will be part of the vendor’s GTS unit, and will offer consultancy and other services to telecommunications firms. “We will take advantage of the cloud, big data and artificial intelligence, as well as our assets such as products, processes and knowhow,” said Tang. The new unit plans to invest $200 million within the next three years in this new operation, Tang added.

In order to launch this new unit, the Chinese vendor is looking to recruit specialized workers. “We will recruit talent, as many as possible,” said Tang. He added that Huawei’s GTS is looking to recruit 500 business architects and solution architects and 100 data scientists for the new business. The new consulting and system integration unit will focus on providing support to fixed and mobile carriers implementing digital transformation strategies, he added. Tang said that a number of operators including Globe (Philippines), Hong Kong Telecom, Safaricom (Kenya) and Viva (Kuwait) are already working with the new consulting and system integration unit.
