The NB-IoT project is a joint initiative between Nordic telco Telia Norway and Datek Light Control
Nordic telecom group Telia Company and Datek Light Control have developed a prototype for smart street lighting in Norway using narrowband-internet of things (NB-IoT) technology.
Telia said the new prototype simplifies the installation and control of smart street lighting resulting in a reduced energy consumption and an optimized system where lighting automatically adapts to the surroundings, and lamps report irregularities, provide alerts and maintenance scheduling, among other things.
When a light fixture is installed in a lamppost, it will automatically connect to Datek’s server via Telia’s network and report its GPS position to Datek’s map application.
“We see that NB-IoT is one of the technologies that can increase the penetration of intelligent guidance systems. In collaboration with Telia we have made a prototype that, in many cases, simplifies the installation of intelligent light fixtures, said Øyvind Sløgedal, CEO of Datek Light Control. “This is a real “plug and play” solution for intelligent outdoor lighting.”
“NB-IoT opens for a lot of opportunities, and it’s exciting to help create concrete solutions that solve real challenges. We now have examples from farming with smart sheep and smart systems for monitoring irrigation, from the maritime environment with smart pumps, from the urban area with smart flow meters and now smart street lighting,” said Jon Christian Hillestad, head of technology at Telia Company.
Earlier this year, Telia Norway had launched a pilot project where 1,000 sheep were equipped NB-IoT technology. Telia Norway and start-up Nortrace have equipped 1,000 sheep with collars with tracking modules that allows the farmer to monitor their position and well-being while they are on summer pasture in Rogaland, Norway.
Telia Norway also launched precision agriculture services based on NB-IoT technology with the goal of providing farmers with a smart system for monitoring irrigation systems. The offering was jointly developed by Telia Norway and Norwegian company 7Sense.
