Nokia, AWS partnership focuses on service providers in the cloud migration process

Nokia announced Thursday it is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to stimulate cloud migration. The Finnish multinational communications company is targeting service providers switching to the AWS platform by offering a suite of new services for consulting, design, integration, migration and operation for infrastructure and applications, according to the company.

Over the last few years, there has been a general trend toward cloud adoption. According to a Forrester Research survey consisting of 1,000 tech decision makers for North American and European enterprise infrastructure, 38% said they were building private clouds, 32% said they were building public clouds and 30% said they would embrace a type of cloud within the year.

The venture between the organizations is intended to boost cloud adoption as service providers aim to commercialize 5G by 2020. The companies will work together to develop new 5G and edge computing strategies by crafting use cases and possible guides for service providers seeking to take advantage of the budding technology.

The partnership will focus on generating new solutions created through a mix of Nuage Network’s SD-WAN and IMPACT IoT platform, as well as AWS’ Greengrass, a machine learning service which powers local edge gateways and applications. With respect to enterprises, AWS will integrate Nokia’s SD-WAN to improve user experience, and deploy branch connectivity in hybrid environments using ‘Single Pane of Glass’ capabilities.

Our collaboration with AWS will accelerate the migration of service provider applications to the cloud and enable us to forge new opportunities together by delivering on next-generation connectivity and cloud services,” commented Nokia’s Chief Strategy Officer Kathrin Buvac,.

“This is a wide-ranging collaboration, spanning our services capabilities in application migration, SD-WAN from Nuage Networks, 5G, and IoT, allowing new growth opportunities for our top customers across both the service provider and large enterprise market segments,” she added.

The news occurred alongside Swisscom, a major telecommunications provider in Switzerland, announcing a suite of new services to bolster migration to either AWS or Microsoft Azure public clouds. Both bundles include introductory workshops with a proof of concept made for particular company use cases.

Commenting on the general the general shift toward the cloud, Terry Wise, global vice president of Channels and Alliances at AWS, said: “Service providers are accelerating their migration to AWS in order to drive innovation for their customers and deliver lower total cost of IT to their organisations.”
