Ericsson to open 5G campus in Belgium next year

The new 5G facility will be opened in partnership with local tech park Corda Campus

Ericsson and Corda Campus announced plant to launch a 5G campus in Hasselt, Belgium.  The 5G facility will be located at Corda Campus, a technology park, and will be fully connected to Ericsson’s R&D center in Aachen, Germany, where 5G development and international pilot projects are executed.

By jointly implementing the campus, the Swedish infrastructure giant and Corda aim to provide industry players with a test environment to develop and trial new applications using the latest technologies years ahead of the expected commercial launch of 5G in Belgium.

“Corda Campus is a high technology campus, where more than 200 innovative companies work on new products and services every day…This 5G Life Campus will provide industries a way to prepare for the future and grow faster,” Raf Degens, director of Corda Campus, said.

“Ericsson and Corda Campus will engage Belgian enterprises to be key players in the development of 5G, helping to speed up industrial digitalization in the country and Europe. This 5G Life Campus, part of the 5G for Europe program launched by Ericsson and industries and institutes across Europe, will help contribute to Belgium’s future economic growth and job market,” Saskia Van Uffelen, country manager of Ericsson Belgium and Luxembourg, said.

The facility is scheduled to open in first quarter of 2018.

Last month, Ericsson and Singapore telecommunications operator Singtel had announced plans to jointly establish a center of excellence (CoE) to facilitate 5G development and deployment in Singapore.

The two partners said the new 5G center will require an initial investment of $1.7 million over the next three years. The companies also said the new facility will support Singapore’s smart nation initiatives. The 5G center will also be open to Optus, an Australian telco controlled by Singtel.  Singtel also said that the center will carry out 5G demos, live field trials and host collaboration with third parties.
