Amazon offers tools to help deploy MCU-based connected devices
NXP Semiconductors, a Dutch global semiconductor manufacturer, introduced the LPC54018 MCU-based IoT module with support for the recently launched Amazon FreeRTOS on Amazon Web Services (AWS), providing developers with universal connections to AWS.
The cost and complexity attached to securing connected nodes has stymied the IoT market from reaching its full potential, with forecasts of as many as 50 billion connected devices in 2020. AWS and NXP said they are working to minimize these complexities while creating secure, cost-effective IoT solutions that boost the accessibility of node-to-cloud connection for engineers.
To help smaller IoT devices connect to the cloud, Amazon introduced Amazon FreeRTOS, an IoT microcontroller operating system. Amazon FreeRTOS builds upon the FreeRTOS, which adds libraries from local and cloud connectivity. It comes with tools that enable users to deploy connected devices and develop IoT applications. Once connected, IoT device applications can leverage cloud capabilities or continue processing data locally with AWS Greengrass.
“Together with AWS, we’re transforming node-to-cloud connectivity,” said Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager of microcontrollers at NXP. “We are committed to delivering secure, power-efficient IoT solutions – the next step of many that will reshape the market.”
The LPC54018 IoT solution, developed by NXP in partnership with Embedded Artists, is a self-contained, microcontroller solution for the development of AWS enabled products. The solution includes a LPC54018-based module with on-board Wi-Fi. It provides unlimited memory extensibility based on embedded SRAM physical unclonable functions (PUF) and on-chip cryptographic accelerators, according to the company.
“Providing options for developers, as they build and deploy products on AWS, requires collaboration with market leaders,” said Satyen Yadav, general manager of AWS IoT & Edge Device Services, AWS. “NXP shares the passion for fostering a community of developers to drive the next wave of power-conscious, secure connected devices for the rapidly evolving IoT.”
AWS also debuted AWS IoT 1-Click, a new service that allows an AWS Lambda trigger for an IoT device to be created in one click. Moreover, the company unveiled a new service called AWS IoT Device Defender, which continuously audits security policies associated with IoT devices to ensure they don’t deviate from security practices. The solution will be available in the first half of next year.
