Nokia unveils Data Refinery solution
Nokia premiered a new data processing software today called Nokia Data Refinery, formerly Comptel Data Refinery, which aims to provide real-time data for context-aware intelligence.
According to the company, Nokia Data Refinery provides intelligent fast data processing to power complex event processing, mediation convergence and consolidation solutions. It captures and processes siloed data from multiple sources, such as customers and connected devices, refining and improving it with contextual information. The solution then delivers the data in the correct format to a business application, enabling service providers to offer personalized digital services.
“Communications service providers are increasingly under pressure to transform into digital service providers,” said Justin Van Der Lande, principal analyst, Analysys Mason, in a prepared statement. “The new Data Refinery product provides the power, flexibility and speed to market to help CSPs better harness and optimize their data to support new digital services, and operate using the same technology as web-scale players like Alibaba, Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft.”
Nokia announced its intent to acquire Finnish network software provider Comptel for $370 million early this year in an effort to advance its software strategy. Although Nokia provides infrastructure equipment and services to companies such as Vodafone, the business has been challenged by a lack of investment in 4G mobile broadband with the commercialization of 5G networks on the horizon. Consequently, the company has been looking to provide more cloud-based software products for the telecom industry, as noted by the Comptel aquisition.
The new release includes support for automated deployment in the cloud alongside elastic scalability, boosting data processing performance on demand while leveraging resources when necessary. Other features include distributable data processing and support for open source technologies, which increase real-time streaming data processing capabilities. The new software release is expected to be available by the end of this year. It can also be offered as an ETSI NFV Virtual Network Function (VNF) and launched with Nokia CloudBand.
“Only data-driven service providers can truly become customer-centric,” said Niilo Fredrikson, head of Digital Intelligence in Nokia’s Applications and Analytics business group. “Efficient and scalable data processing should form the backbone of all service provider operations – it’s what will allow them to run their business in ‘digital time’ to meet customers’ changing needs. Data Refinery allows service providers to more efficiently capture and optimize their data to create new business value and provide a superior, personalized digital customer experience.”
