REAN Cloud scores DoD deal to accelerate cloud migration
Northern Virginia cloud systems integrator REAN Cloud announced last week it landed a five-year contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) potentially worth $950 million. As part of the deal, REAN Cloud will provide Pentagon agencies direct access to cloud services using an automatic pricing and procurement model.
The production other transaction agreement (OTA) awarded to REAN Cloud is based on a prototype project the company completed for the U.S. Transportation Command last year. The project involved helping the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx), a DoD organization, move dozens of legacy applications to a government-approved, commercial cloud-based solution. REAN Cloud will help the U.S. Transportation Command and other DoD agencies transfer legacy applications to a preferred commercial cloud-based solution under the recent deal as well.
“Our experience has taught us that to get the full benefit of the cloud, you have to think differently. The speed and agility that our patent-pending technology brings to cloud migration and operations invites a similarly nimble approach for the government,” said Sekhar Puli, managing partner at REAN Cloud, in a statement. “Our DoD customers can now achieve the same efficiencies available to the commercial sector as they seek to design, migrate, automate, manage and scale systems and databases running in the cloud.”
OTA’s are not typically subject to the federal laws and regulations that apply to government procurement contracts. The recent contract is part of a broader initiative by the Pentagon to increase cloud adoption. Last September, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan issued a memo to DoD agencies establishing a new steering group intended to increase the use of cloud services, with an emphasis on commercial solutions.
REAN Cloud is an AWS consulting partner. Awarding the contract to REAN Cloud is notable on account of the company’s close relationship with AWS. The recent deal with REAN Cloud could tip the multi-billion dollar Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract, an initiative to accelerate the DoD’s adoption of cloud architectures and services, in AWS’s favor.
