Some of the cities in which LoRaWAN networks are now available include Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Miami and Washington D.C.
California-based semiconductor and software company Semtech announced that Comcast’s enterprise internet of things network service MachineQ has connected operational LoRaWAN networks to 10 U.S. cities.
MachineQ says that the roll-out means that it now has availability in more than 15 U.S. metropolitan areas: Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco and Oakland, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
“As we continue to deploy LoRaWAN-based access to cities across the U.S., we are enabling businesses across a wide range of industries to bring IoT solutions to market faster, which is good for the ecosystem as a whole,” said Alex Khorram, general manager of Comcast’s machineQ, in a statement. “We are seeing real momentum as solution providers and end users alike are realizing the benefits of having a low-power, wide-area connectivity option as they look to take advantage of IoT within their organizations.”
“In the last year, the increasing number of IoT use cases has rapidly grown and machineQ’s optimized LoRaWAN network drives even more diverse applications and IoT adoption,” said Marc Pegulu, VP and GM for Semtech’s wireless and sensing products group. “MachineQ’s widespread and comprehensive presence in these … cities demonstrates that enterprises believe that Semtech’s LoRa technology is a proven and established IoT platform able to support a diverse number of applications in making cities smarter, from improving parking congestion to remote lighting control for street lights.”
According to ABI Research, IoT technology revenues across 12 key smart city technologies and verticals, including metering, parking and street lighting, is expected to grow from around $25 billion in 2017 to $62 billion in 2026 at an average growth rate of 11%.
Last month, Semptech announced that Alibaba Cloud and Zhejiang Provincial Company of China Unicom jointly deployed the pre-commercial service for the IoT based on LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology in Hanghzou and Ningbo, China.
Using Semtech’s LoRa technology, Alibaba Cloud plans to support an extensive ecosystem created by LoRa-based sensors. The Zhejiang Provincial Company of China Unicom is expected to deploy a network based on LoRa Technology in Hangzhou and Ningbo by mid-2018 to expand the services of its IoT network.
Semtech also announced that IoTsens, an Internet of Things solutions and services firm, has integrated LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology in its smart water platform in Spain.
IoTsens entered a joint venture with FACSA, a Spanish water management company, to accurately track and control water management in Castellón, Spain. IoTsens provides FACSA with sound, air quality, smart parking, and irrigation solutions among other IoT services for its smart city project.
