Sprint launches 5G-ready connected car platform

Platform includes maintenance reminders, preventive notifications and roadside assistance

Sprint has partnered with NXM Labs to launch a 5G-ready connected car platform.

The carrier said the platform will offer high-speed, on-demand passenger Wi-Fi with advanced vehicle health monitoring and safety. The connectivity service will be offered through Sprint’s LTE network.

Sprint also said that the new offering includes what it claims to be the first blockchain-powered internet of things (IoT) security system.

The NXM platform includes an automotive router to keeps people connected on the road and through mobile apps. Some of its main features include maintenance reminders, preventive notifications, scheduling and booking service appointments.

“Through the power of blockchain technology, NXM provides an advanced level of security and advanced capabilities to vehicles that might not otherwise have it, even extending Wi-Fi,” said Ivo Rook, SVP of IoT for Sprint. “With the power of Sprint’s high-speed LTE and upcoming 5G network behind the technology, consumers will be able to experience the latest in automotive technology, even in early-model vehicles.”

The platform will also offer smart parental controls, anti-theft features, roadside assistance and collision detection and will enable drivers to find nearby parking and low-cost gas stations.

Sprint also said that multiple family vehicles can also connect to each other with the new offering.

“We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with Sprint to bring to market the most advanced and secure connected car platform ever powered by the industry’s first Blockchain OS,” said Scott Rankine, NXM Lab’s CEO and co-founder. “We’re making it easy for both preowned and new car buyers to experience the latest in smart connected vehicle technology features that not only help protect their investment but keeps them and their family members safe.”

Sprint said that the connected car platform will be available later this year at automotive dealers nationwide.

Last year, a report by ABI Research highlighted that there is a growing opportunity for U.S carriers in the telematics segment. As the US cellular M2M market grows to more than 300 million connections in 2022, ABI said connected cars will be a key segment for operators to focus on.

“Some of the biggest opportunities and drivers for cellular operators are in telematics and asset tracking; coverage and low latency are the essential requirements for these fast-growing segments,” said Kevin McDermott, principal analyst for IoT at ABI Research.
